Shoshin Tea Practice – Certificate Course

Sadō, the Japanese Tea Ceremony, is a refined cultural art that takes years of study and dedication to master. Shoshin Tea Practice is not a formal tea ceremony, but an approachable, structured program designed to let you experience and learn the essence of tea preparation in the spirit of sadō.

Over the course of 24 lessons (90 minutes each), you will learn step by step how to make tea in the Japanese style — using authentic utensils and guided by tradition — while practicing on a tabletop setting for accessibility.

What You Will Learn

The history, philosophy, and background of the tea ceremony

  1. The names and uses of tea utensils (chadōgu)

  2. Fundamental etiquette and movements

  3. Step-by-step practice to prepare and serve a bowl of matcha

  4. Mindfulness, respect, and the aesthetic principles that shape the way of tea

Course Format

90 minutes per lesson

  1. 24 lessons total (weekly or flexible schedule)

  2. Individual guidance and practice with authentic tools

  3. Culminates in a face-to-face test covering:

    • Knowledge of tea ceremony background

    • Proper handling of tools and utensils

    • Full performance of preparing a bowl of tea

Certification

  • Diploma from Sahana London – £200

  • Diploma from the Japan Culture Association – JPY55,000 (optional, for those wishing formal recognition)
